Case
The first port reception facility – Ballast as a Service (BaaS) in the port of Hamburg
In May 2024, we launched Ballast as a Service (BaaS) in the Port of Hamburg. Key benefits for the Port of Hamburg:
- Permanent equipment availability:
Ensures continuous and reliable ballast water treatment. - Cost-effective compliance:
Achieve D2 compliance at a reduced cost compared to traditional alternatives. - Environmental protection:
Effective elimination of invasive species through pasteurization. - Expert partnership:
Collaboration with Jongen GmbH & Co. KG, bringing decades of ship waste removal expertise in Hamburg for professional and efficient service delivery.
Key benefits of our BWMS
No Chemicals
No more expensive chemicals and no impact from brackish water.
No Filters
No expensive filter maintenance and offhire.
No UV
Challenging water no longer an issue. No more reactor cleaning.
Independent of water quality
Works efficiently in all water conditions - no impact from turbidity, salinity, or temperature.
No Holding Time
One pass neutralises all organisms (D-2 Compliant).
No Impact on Cargo Operations
By-pass the BWMS during cargo operations. IMO and US Coast Guard Approved.
No Expensive Sensors
No TRO Sensors, UV Intensity & Transmittance Sensors or Turbidity Sensors. Our system only uses Temperature and Pressure sensors.
Heat Based
Uses pasteurisation - simply heating the water to remove invasive species and pathogens - a simple and proven solution.
Bawat helps maritime operators achieve compliance, efficiency, and sustainability worldwide.

How Bawat BaaS works
01.
Direct connection to the vessel
The Mobile BWMS is connected to the vessel’s ballast water piping from quayside, barge-based operations, or temporarily installed onboard the vessel.
02.
One-Pass treatment technology
Water passes through the Mobile BWMS only once to achieve full compliance with IMO and USCG standards.
03.
Water flow management
Ballast water is pumped through the Mobile BWMS using the ship’s own pumps or an external booster pump.
04.
Option for fresh ballast
Ships can refill with pre-treated water, taken from the port, treated via the Mobile BWMS, and then transferred into the vessel’s ballast tanks.
