The Bawat ballast water treatment system (BWTS) is available for both new build and retrofit applications on ships. Bawat’s ballast water management system (BWMS) represents a real innovative breakthrough in ballast water management.
The Bawat system uses heat treatment (pasteurization) as method to eliminate harmful microorganisms in ballast water in a one-pass solution, which makes it an efficient and cost-effective solution for ships.
The solution exploits available on-board waste energy to treat ballast water making it the most sustainable system in the market. It does not require the use of UV or filters which leads to simple maintainance and operation.

New buildings:
For new builds, the Bawat system can be integrated into the ship’s design and installed during the construction process. This allows shipbuilders and ship owners to ensure compliance with ballast water treatment regulations from the outset.
Retrofit:
For retrofit applications, the Bawat system can be installed on existing vessels to bring them into compliance with ballast water treatment regulations. The system is customized to fit the specific needs and requirements of each vessel, and can be installed with minimal disruption to the ship’s operations.
Frequently asked questions
Is the Bawat BWMS affected by Challenging Water Quality (CWQ) or Brackish (low salinity) water?
No. As the Bawat BWMS uses heat to treat the ballast water, all water qualities are treated to D-2 standard including low salinity water with no negative impact on the flow rate. System slowdowns and shutdowns do not occur as there are no filters that can otherwise get clogged.
Can ballast water be treated during voyage?
Yes. Ballast water treatment is typically carried out during voyage using available waste heat from the vessel’s engines. This allows treatment to be completed without affecting cargo operations or increasing port stay.
Are spare parts easily available?
Yes. The Bawat BWTS is built using proven industrial components that are widely used in the maritime industry. Spare parts are readily available through Bawat’s global support network.
Does it impact overall vessel efficiency?
Yes – positively. The Bawat BWTS utilises available waste heat from the vessel’s engines to treat ballast water, improving overall energy utilisation onboard. As treatment is typically carried out during voyage, ballast water operations can be completed without affecting cargo operations or increasing time spent in port.
