Large-scale ballast water treatment for ship recycling

The challenge

When vessels reach the end of their operational life, significant volumes of ballast water can remain onboard.

During recycling, the vessel’s own ballast water treatment system may no longer be available or suitable for the operation, creating a need for external treatment before the remaining ballast water can be safely discharged.

For two large-scale recycling operations in Northern Europe, Bawat was called upon to provide the necessary treatment capacity.

The solution

Bawat deployed its mobile Ballast as a Service (BaaS)™ solution directly to the recycling operations.

Using Bawat’s patented one-pass heat treatment technology, the ballast water was treated externally without relying on the vessels’ own BWMS.

The technology uses heat to neutralise invasive species and pathogens and requires:

• No filters
• No UV
• No chemicals
• One-pass treatment
• Independent of salinity and water quality

The mobile setup enabled treatment capacity to be provided where it was needed as an integrated part of the recycling operations.

The Outcome

Across the two projects, Bawat treated more than 100,000 m³ of ballast water for the same customer.

The operations demonstrate how mobile ballast water treatment can support responsible ship recycling when large volumes need to be managed and onboard treatment is no longer an option.

Environmental responsibility does not end when a vessel stops operating.
