Emergency ballast water compliance for a domestic-trade vessel at Frederikshavn

The Challenge

Ballast water compliance risk is not limited to large, ocean-going cargo vessels.

Smaller vessels such as bunker ships, workboats and other domestic-trade vessels may operate exclusively within the waters of a single state and therefore not normally be subject to the same ballast water treatment requirements.

But that changes when the vessel’s trading pattern changes.

A bunker vessel operating within Danish domestic waters was preparing for a single voyage to Sweden – taking it outside the waters covered by its normal domestic operation. The Danish Maritime Authority (Søfartsstyrelsen) identified the compliance gap and stopped the vessel before departure.

There was an additional operational challenge: the vessel had never been fitted with a ballast water treatment system and had no proper flange connections for a standard treatment hookup.

The challenge was therefore physical as well as regulatory: how do you treat the ballast water of a vessel that was never designed to connect to a treatment system?

The solution

The vessel was referred to Bawat to resolve the issue directly.

With no standard connection point available, Bawat’s team adapted the treatment setup on site, deploying a submersible pump directly into the vessel’s ballast tank and bypassing the need for a conventional flanged connection.

Using the mobile Bawat BaaS unit, 150 m³ of ballast water was treated on site.

The full operation – mobilization, treatment and clearance – was completed the same evening. The job started at 17:00 and the vessel was cleared by 21:40.

The outcome

Within five hours, the vessel was brought into compliance and cleared to continue its voyage to Sweden, avoiding an extended delay to its schedule.

The case highlights a ballast water compliance challenge that can easily be overlooked.

Vessels operating exclusively within domestic waters may not normally need onboard ballast water treatment. But when their operational pattern changes and they sail outside those waters, even for a single voyage, additional ballast water compliance requirements may apply.

For vessels that have never required an onboard treatment system, the challenge can go beyond treatment itself: they may not even have the infrastructure required for a conventional treatment hookup.

By bringing mobile, adaptable treatment capacity directly to the vessel – including field solutions for vessels without standard connection infrastructure – Bawat BaaS gives vessel operators, ports and authorities a practical way to resolve unexpected ballast water compliance challenges without extended delays to vessel schedules.
