Case stories – Bawat BaaS

Complex tank flushing and ballast water treatment at the Port of Hamburg

The challenge

Ballast water compliance is not always simply a matter of treating and discharging water.

During a recent operation at the Port of Hamburg, a vessel required a complex, multi-step tank flushing procedure alongside the treatment of nearly 3,000 m³ of ballast water.

The operation had to be carried out directly at the quay, coordinated with the vessel’s schedule and ongoing cargo operations. This required a flexible treatment setup that could be deployed alongside the vessel without disrupting activity at the terminal.

The solution

Bawat deployed a mobile BaaS unit — a containerized, type-approved LBRF — positioned under the container cranes and connected directly to the vessel’s ballast tanks. Flushing and treatment were run as one coordinated operation rather than two separate procedures, with compliant water discharged directly into the harbor on completion.

The outcome

The full operation — flushing and treatment of nearly 3,000 m³ — was completed within 24 hours, directly at the quay, with both tanks and water brought to D-2 compliance. The vessel kept its schedule; the terminal’s cargo operations continued uninterrupted throughout.

The case is a useful illustration of a compliance gap that is easy to overlook: a D-2 compliant discharge doesn’t automatically mean D-2 compliant tanks. When it doesn’t, mobile treatment capacity that can flush and treat in one coordinated visit — rather than requiring a dedicated facility or extended downtime — is what keeps compliance and schedule from being at odds.

Because operational reality doesn’t always follow the plan.
